I haven’t posted any new photos of graffiti in ages. So here’s a little snapshot of a mural in Psyrri Square in Athens I took in December while I was visiting.

Etam Cru
blog, city stories, paint the cityIt’s been a while since my last paint the city post. I have been sitting on this one for a while now. Ever since my sister sent me the link of Etam Cru’s website to check out their stuff. And, boy, is it gorgeous!
Murals
blog, city stories, paint the cityA very light graffiti post today.
Greek cities can be so grey and ugly that graffiti is often a very welcome addition to them. Also the building code and the way cities and built up often result in large blind walls. I always like it when artists get commissioned to cover the walls in murals. These are just two examples, one from Athens and one from Thessaloniki. Both of them are quite well known in Greece.
Figures on crumbling walls
blog, city stories, paint the cityI’m running low on photos of interesting graffiti. It’s time to start sifting through my backlog of uncategorised photos.
Today I’m sharing a couple of photos taken from the Gazi neighbourhood in central Athens. For many years it was an in-between sort of place. Very run down in parts, full of abandoned lots and dilapidated buildings, and very hip and happening in others parts, full of new bars, restaurants and clubs.
The Decorated Depot
blog, city stories, paint the cityThis is one of the most famous pieces of street art in Athens. It’s a depot for the Athens Trolleys located in the area known as Gazi, actually just bellow Thuseio. It’s a large graffiti mural that surrounds the whole building and strangely enough was commissioned a number of years ago. It stood the test of time for quite a long while, becoming a famous landmark, but last time I passed by I think they have started to replace some of the murals with fresh ones. There is now another mural right opposite it, on the outer wall of the Technopolis complex but I never got around to photographing it.
Painting on Doors
blog, city stories, paint the cityGraffiti and street art is mainly done on walls, but in Greece there are no rules. Graffiti can be found anywhere, from run down neighbourhoods to the main shopping streets of the cities, from crumbling buildings to the blind walls of tall blocks, to, yes, doors. The metal protective grilles of shop front are a particular favourite, not only for random graffiti, but also for commissioned art.
The Wrinkles of the City
blog, city stories, paint the cityNow for some really impressive street art that I have not seen in person. All photos are taken from the artist’s own website.
JR is an interesting street artist. He is primarily a photographer who chooses to exhibit his large prints in public spaces. Turning the streets into an art gallery.
Dancing Skeletons
blog, city stories, paint the cityIt’s strange, but I only seem to have two photos of graffiti skeletons. You would have thought there would have been more. There must be more.
Graffiti farm animals
blog, city stories, paint the cityI’m going to post and run tonight. I’m working on a project and it’s sucking all my energy and time.
Tonight’s graffiti photographs are from Thessaloniki, a city in northern Greece. I found these two drawings quite close to each other. They were probably done by the same person.
Cats of Paris
blog, city stories, paint the cityHuh, when I thought of this subject I honestly thought I had more photos of graffiti cats. Apparently I didn’t. Unless I have more in my large stock of to-sort photos.
The funny little sketch of the grinning cat is one that appears all over Paris – or at least it did when I was there. It’s a thing that appears all over France. The cat is called M. Chat or Monsieur Chat. It was fun walking around Paris and spotting the grinning cartoon cat in various random places.
